There are lots of reasons to want a penis pump beyond needing a prop for an Austin Powers Halloween costume. Some guys with erectile dysfunction find them super helpful. Some trans people find penis pumps useful for encouraging clitoral growth over time. And yes, some guys use them to make their junk look (and feel) a little bigger.
Look: It’s no secret that penis enlargement is something many people wish for. Some dabble in taking sketchy supplements, applying topical creams, or doing daily dick exercises that claim they’ll boost your measurements. Some folks even go so far as to get their junk augmented surgically, like with penile implants, which can be expensive and complicated. (And involve surgery. On your dick.) A penis pump's effects won't be more than temporary—but that's not nothing.
And as with everything else, when it comes to penis pumps, size isn't the only thing that matters. Using one can just be part of the fun of sex. Just remember to go low and slow, and use a good lube inside the pump, for comfort’s sake. If you feel any tingling, numbness, or other strange sensations, heed those signals from your body and call it a day. Penis pumps are designed to suck, but not that way.
That depends on what you’re hoping they’ll achieve. Penis pumps are a popular choice for people struggling with erectile dysfunction, but “anyone can enjoy the benefits of a penis pump, regardless of their ability to achieve an erection,” Sunae says, because of the way pumps increase penile sensitivity and pleasure.
As for increasing size (length or girth) and hardness, the answer is: Yes. For now. “Penis pumps are an easy, safe, and effective way to temporarily enhance the size and firmness of your penis,” says Rain Sunae, a sex educator and community manager for sexual wellness brand Lovers. Temporary is a key word in Sunae's sentence.
Science hasn't shown any evidence that using a penis pump, no matter how often or intensely, will You'll certainly hear anecdotal evidence from pump devotees who insist they’ve increased their size through long-time regular use of a pump, which the company L.A. Pump says is a result of how pump usage “gently stretches the suspensatory ligament” over time. But Sunae—and research as a whole—maintains that the size-boosting effects of pumps are only temporary.
“Every patient wants a bigger penis,” says Dr. Jagan K. Kansal, co-founder of Down There Urology, so it’s understandable that there are so many products out there which claim they’ll help you achieve this. Aside from penile enlargement surgery or a non-surgical filler procedure called PhalloFill (which Kansal recommends), it’s dubious that any dick-expanding schemes (pumps, pills, or otherwise) actually work in the long-term.
A penis pump is “a vacuum device that creates a suction effect to increase and encourage more blood flow to the penis,” says Dr. Christopher Asandra, a sexual health expert and founder of anti-aging clinic FOY by AsandraMD. “By creating negative pressure in the device chamber, it draws blood into the penis” Voila: a fuller, harder erection.
For best results, Asandra says you’ll want to use a constriction ring (i.e., a cock ring) along with your pump to help maintain your erection for up to 30 minutes.
You can use your pump as needed to summon a boner, but if you’re looking for long-term increases in erection quality, you’ll want to commit to a regular pumping routine. L.A. Pump recommends pumping three to five times per week for 20 to 60 minutes, explaining: “Much like bodybuilding, practicing a consistent regimen of pumping several times a week can maximize gains.” That said, LA Pump is a pump manufacturer, not a doctor: listen to your body, and don't expect results if pumping doesn't result in you naturally getting a better boner.
Be careful not to overdo it, too. And use a water-based lube with your pump for maximum safety and comfort. “Applying too much pressure can result in temporary bruising or discoloration of the penis, water blisters, and minor bleeding,” says L.A. Pump’s FAQ.
“There are many different styles of penis pumps, including air pumps, water pumps, and automatic pumps,” Sunae says. For the purposes of this article, we’ll break them down like this:
Hand-powered: You pump these yourself, by hand, as the name would indicate. These tend to give you the most control, and are also the safest option overall, as they’ll typically have a manual quick-release valve in case of any sudden discomfort or pain—and many of them have a gauge to let you know exactly how much pressure is being exerted on your dick at any given moment. One drawback of hand-powered pumps, though, is that they may be difficult for you to use if you struggle with pain or strength issues in your hands.
Automatic: These mimic hand-powered pumps, but they do the pumping for you. They’re convenient and easy to use, but they run on batteries (either rechargeable or disposable), which— needless to say—can be annoying if the power runs out mid-session. Many automatic pumps will display the amount of pressure being exerted, but their quick-release valve (if they have one) may be electronic rather than manual, which would become a safety issue if the pump was to die during use.
Hydro pump: Rather than pulling air out of the cylinder to create pressure, these pumps pull water out of the cylinder. Naturally, this means that you have to fill the pump with water to use it, so these are easiest to use in the shower or bathtub, which can be inconvenient if you’d rather pump in bed or elsewhere. However, some people find water pumps more comfortable than air-based kinds.
