The weapon is expected to be purchased from UAE-based Caracal International, which was declared as the lowest bidder for the army’s Fast Track Procurement (FTP) in 2018.
The bid was for the procurement of a total of 93,895 new carbines.
If a contract is finalised with the UAE firm, the carbines will replace the existing 9mm British Sterling 1A1 sub machine guns, reported The Print.
The carbine is reported to be based on the AR-15 rifle.
India has accelerated its weapons procurement process to improve its soldiers’ protection and safety in the battlefield.
It comes in the wake of the recent border tensions with China. Both countries have agreed to disengage at the Line of Control in Ladakh.
In addition, the Indian Army’s Infantry Directorate has issued a request for information (RFI) to acquire 100,000 ‘AK-47 protected’ ballistic helmets.
The cost of the procurement remains unknown. However, the request for proposals is expected next year.
Capable of supporting night-vision goggles, a torch, visors and face shields, the helmet is expected to protect personnel from AK-47’s 7.62×39 mm Mild Steel Core and Hard Steel Core bullets.
