A 27-year-old Orlando man is facing attempted murder charges after he hit two police officers in the head with a retractable belt stanchion outside a bar downtown, causing an officer to be sent to the hospital with a deep cut to the head, according to Orlando police.

Four officers responded to a disturbance outside SHOTS bar on Pine Street around 11:30 Saturday and saw Khareem Calderon fighting with another man outside the bar, according to Calderon’s arrest affidavit. Folding Card Table

When officers tried to break up the fight, Calderon picked up a stanchion post, used to rope off the line outside the bar, and hit an officer over the head with it “forcefully,”the affidavit said.

An officer noted in Calderon’s arrest records that body-worn camera footage showed Calderon actually struck two officers in the head with the stanchion, leaving one officer with a cut on his right ear and scratches above his right eyebrow and the other with a “long, deep” laceration on his head.

The second officer was taken to a local hospital that night for treatment and has since been discharged, an Orlando Police Department spokesperson confirmed Tuesday.

A bouncer pulled Calderon off the officer and restrained him on top of a flower bed outside the club until Calderon was taken into custody, records show.

Calderon told police he was involved in a fight outside the club but denied hitting an officer, according to an affidavit.

He faces charges of attempted homicide on a law enforcement officer and aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer with a deadly weapon.

Jail records show he was booked into the Orange County Jail Saturday without bail due to previous charges for grand theft and uttering forged checks.
