Major supermarket Morrisons has become the first supermarket to start rationing sales of peppers to two packs per customers. In other stores like Waitrose, stock is said to be running low, with shelves looking empty.

This is due to poor weather in Spain which is the cause of the limited supply, The Mirror reports. Tesco and Aldi were among the supermarkets to limit pepper sales this year, with shoppers warned that fruit and vegetable shortage could last until May.

Farmers also warned retailers of not paying enough to grow supplies, impacting the number of crops being grown such as tomatoes has affected supply from Morocco.

A retail source told The Sun: "Spain is key for supplying British retailers in winter and almost every UK retailer will source peppers from there. They need warmth and light to develop - green into yellow then into red."

A sign was left out in one Morrisons shop which read: "Availability across our tomato range has been significantly impacted by adverse weather conditions across Spain and Morocco.

In February, secretary of the Lea Valley Growers Association, Lee Stiles, spoke to the BBC, and said: "The majority of tomatoes, peppers and aubergines are not going to be around in big volumes until May. The current shortage is likely to improve within a couple of weeks."

There was also more warning shortages earlier this week for products like toiler paper being harder to source.

Chris Forbes, owner of Cheeky Panda warned that a new EU ban on products has links to deforestation. Mr Forbes, said to The Grocer: "There will definitely be a squeeze on availability and we can expect the price of recycled tissue to rise as demand for alternatives increases."
