Professional Tool Reviews for Pros
For me, sanding is one of those jobs I truly enjoy. In fact, I find it quite therapeutic, albeit a little tough on the hands after a while. With so many options on the market, choosing the right style of sander to fit your job can be a little tricky. Today, we’re taking a look at the Ryobi 18V Random Orbit Sander so you can decide if it’s the best fit for you! Corner Sander
Don’t miss out on the Best Orbital Sander reviews of 2023!
The Ryobi cordless random orbit sander’s pad moves at a rate of 10,000 OPM, that’s oscillations per minute. Unlike a traditional sheet sander, this model has a central mounting point that allows the pad to travel 3/32 inches as well as rotate to help avoid swirl marks.
Some cordless sanders boast a higher oscillation rate, or even multiple speeds, but Ryobi’s single sanding speed is pretty effective. Don’t get me wrong, higher speeds can be a good thing, but it’s not always the most important aspect. Ryobi also tells us they managed to reduce felt vibration by 40%, making it a great option for general-purpose sanding applications.
This sander features a 5-inch hook and loop backing pad. The integrated vent holes allow dust particles to flow up through the pad and out the 1 1/4-inch dist port into the collection bag. You can also connect your favorite vacuum to help keep the dust at bay.
The Ryobi PCL406 weighs in at 2.7 pounds as a bare tool and 3.3 pounds with the kitted 4.0Ah battery. It stands 6 inches tall, and the rubberized pommel is just under 3 inches wide. The compact design contours nicely to my medium-sized hands, and the narrow tool body easily accommodates a second hand for stability.
As we mentioned earlier, this is a single speed sander, so the controls are pretty simple. Ryobi placed the ON/OFF button right on the front of the pommel for easy one-handed access.
This sander retails for $59 as a bare tool and $119 as a kit. The kit includes a standard 4.0Ah battery and charger. Ryobi backs this sander with a 3-year warranty.
To us, the Ryobi random orbit sander is a big step up from their previous corded model. In spite of loosing some speed, this cordless sander is very effective and easy to use. It’s perfect for one-handed use, but isn’t so small that you can’t use a second hand when you need a little more finesse. If you’re looking to phase out your older corded sander, this is a great option that’s easy on the hand and your wallet.
